10 Steps to Developing a Quality Lesson Plan

Posted by admin on February 28th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

This guide is not meant to be the one and only way to develop a lesson plan; however, it is going to provide you with at least some good methods to start with. A general overview highlights the key points of creating a useful and working lesson plan.

Below is a list of the steps that are usually involved in developing a quality lesson plan as well as a description of what each component should be. They will be listed in 10 of the best points.

1. The first thing that you will have to consider, obviously, is what you want to teach. This should be developed based upon your state or local school standards. You also need to be aware of what grade level you are developing the lesson plan for. Record a time estimate for your lesson plan to help you to better budget your time.

Once you have chosen your topic, you can begin choosing how you want to teach the topic in general. If you didn’t use the state standards to help in developing your topic, you will want to refer to them now to see what specific standards your lesson plan can fulfill.

Having your lesson plan properly set up with state standards, helps to prove its worthiness and necessity later. It also helps to assuring that your students are being taught what the state requires.

If you are able to blend your lesson plan with the local school standards, record links to those standards in your lesson plan in writing for reference later. If you are however, writing this lesson plan for a website, you will want to be sure that you include a title that properly reflects your topic.

2. Develop clear, specific objectives to be sure that your lesson plan will teach exactly what you want it to. You must note that these objectives should not be activities that will be used in the lesson plan. Rather, they should be the learning outcomes of those activities.

As an example, if you wanted to teach your class how to add 1 + 3, the objective may be that “the students will know how to add 1 + 3″ or more specifically “the students will demonstrate how to add 1 + 3.”

Your objectives should also be directly measurable. What this means is that you need to make sure that you will be able to tell whether these objectives were met or not. You can certainly have more than one objective for a lesson plan if you feel that this would be more useful.

In order for you to be able to make objectives more meaningful, you may want to include both wide and narrow objectives. The wide objectives would be more like ambitions and they would include the overall goal of the lesson plan, for example, in order for you to gain familiarity with adding two numbers together.

The specific objectives would be more like the one listed above, in such a manner, as “the students will demonstrate how to add the numbers 2 and 3 together.”

Designing The Perfect School Science Lab

Posted by admin on February 28th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

School science laboratories seem to always be designed by accountants. They are generally poorly laid out and ill-equipped to serve their purpose.I have taught in many of these disasters and have designed other labs that have been a pleasure to teach in.

It would be nice if price was not a constraining factor in all school building design, but it is.The best way to approach the design of your lab is from the stand-point of what you need, then pare it down if the total cost is over-budget.

A school laboratory is usually larger than the average classroom. This is because it may have 35 students moving around it, flames from Bunsen burners, sinks, electrical equipment and glassware all at the same time, as well as writing materials, computers and boards. The whole setup sounds impossible.

Ideally you need to separate student writing areas from student experimental areas. The easiest way to do this is to have sinks, electrical outlets and workbenches around the three sides of the room. Cupboards for glassware and electrical equipment will slot underneath these workbenches. There needs to be a clear walkway all around the room in front of these workbenches, so that students can move about safely. The fouth side of the room will be where the board and teacher’s bench are.

You will need fume hoods, or fume cupboards, with extraction facilities to the outside. School fume hoods are not used very often, because the chemicals used in school labs are not aprticularly noxious. Fume hoods are best situated on the wall with the board and the teacher’s area. Using a fume hood with a class is largely impractical because of the logistics issues involved with 35 students wanting to use one or two small spaces at the same time. These areas will be used infrequently and only briefly.

You will also need desks or benches for students to sit at to write at and for non-practical lessons. These workbenches will are best situated about five feet away from the perimeter work benches. The exact arrangement of these workspaces will depend on the dimensions of your laboratory.

A fan arrangement works well, with the desks end on to where the taecher stands. Other possibilities include joined groups of desks and desks tee-ed off the teacher’s desk. Groups of desks make for more chatter amongst your students.

If you are installing an LCD projector, then consider mounting it from the ceiling where it projects to the board at the front.

That gives you your perfect school laboratory. You will almost certainly be overbudget at this point. How can you reduce the cost?

* Cut the number of sinks - A large cost saving, but disastrous in terms of increasing student movement during experimental work. Consider long sinks at the back of the worktop though.
* Cut the number of electrical outlets - Small savings
* Cut the number of cupboards - Large savings possible, but increases student movement around the laboratory, and where do you put all the equipment?
* Have just one fume-hood - Large savings, and you will rarely use it anyway.

Teach Your First Grader How To Spell

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

Our education begins from the day we’re born. While we don’t immediately plunge into school, we’re constantly exposed to new things that help develop our minds. Academics are only part of our long journey to knowledge.

By the time we enter kindergarten, we are ready to begin the reading and writing aspects, but at a slow and steady pace. Too much too soon can overwhelm and confuse us. When we hit 1st grade, we are more prepared to tackle the nitty gritty. I recall my 1st grade spelling, reading and mathematics, and how they introduced me to a whole new world.

When my daughter was born, I certainly wasn’t thinking about school yet. The formula and diapers kept me pretty preoccupied. Now that she’s seven years old, and in the first grade, academics are a major concern. One thing I noticed right away is that 1st grade spelling and mathematics are slightly different than they used to be. Now this is a good thing.

Schools are constantly pushing our children to learn more at a younger age. The first time my daughter brought home her reading and writing homework, I was amazed at how much she would surely learn the very first year. The little books are a great start to reading well.

In comparison to when I was in 1st grade, 1st grade spelling has hit a new level. I don’t recall dealing with so many words. My daughter is already at a level where she can read the majority of things we see when we go out in public. This is great! Kids now days can even get help with their 1st grade spelling on the Internet.

This is a wonderful tool for kids to grow up with these days. They can certainly take advantage of the various websites that have spelling games and lessons. There are a number of different kinds of software out there for this as well. One thing I love to do is read and write with my daughter on a daily basis in order to help her with her 1st grade spelling, writing and reading. This is always a great idea for any parent. When we work with our children, we really increase their learning abilities and initiative.

If you have a child, you can take advantage of online resources in order to better their academic skills. It is never too early to start teaching our children. Hop online today and see what’s available, and only a mouse click away.

The Challenges of teaching math today

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

During my years of teaching I’ve been wondering what to do to improve math education. My own teaching philosophy is simple, but throughout the years it has proven to be effective. While the groups I have taught have been diverse, there are certain consistencies in their responses, particularly, students appreciate a clear and sound explanation of a difficult concept, and experience the greatest growth when they have the chance to express themselves by asking any questions they might have and feel comfortable in class. My first objective in any class is to create a safe atmosphere for learning. That involves encouraging students to express themselves freely, but respectfully.
It is always extremely important to set the tone during the first classes, telling the students what is expected from them, and what can they expect from me as a teacher. Learning the students’ names is a very good start to creating a personalized experience. Some students feel very intimidated by being in a math class, and treating them individually helps to bring them into the group, as well as to convey a sense that they are not just bystanders, that I care about their individual progress and am there to help them with their specific needs.

Secondly, there is no substitute for good teaching. The key to success is to teach well. It’s very rewarding to receive positive feedback from students about the quality of your teaching. I think it’s very important to find a way of seeing math concepts that appeals to students. Being able to translate difficult concepts into something that they can digest is a must. Still, every class is a new challenge, and some old tricks of the trade might not work all the time. We as teachers have to be prepared to adapt to each class and use our creativity and intuition to help the students learn.

Third, I think it is fundamental to be dynamic and entertaining. Math can be dense sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring or tedious. Being dynamic means to be proactive and receptive. We need to be proactive by taking the initiative to show
the students new perspectives they didn’t imagine before, and we need to be receptive in order to adjust our techniques to make them the most suitable for the specific needs of a group of students. It is a fact that every group of students is different, and each group needs different approaches. Flexibility is the key.

Fourth, I like to challenge students, with achievable tasks that can build their confidence as they stretch beyond their comfort level. I like to encourage them to do things they didn’t think they could do. I have noticed that the students find tremendous satisfaction when they achieve something that they didn’t think they could achieve. To see that is really rewarding. That’s one of the biggest payoffs of a teaching career, to see the students find unexpected talents in themselves.

Teaching mathematics requires great sensitivity and perceptiveness. There are people taking math classes who have no interest in the field at all, and take the class only because it is a requirement for their major. It’s also common to find people who are very frightened of how hard math can be. These are instances in which the teacher must convey to the student that even though math can be challenging, it is like any other subject, and is accomplishable through discipline, persistence, and hard work. These students’ preconception of math as difficult and abstruse is often their biggest stumbling block, and as a teacher I help them to break down these mental barriers by providing alternative ways of looking at problems until the information “clicks.”

Positive leadership is the key to making students feel that they can get a lot from the class they are taking. It is our role as teachers to let them know that math is an incredibly exciting field and that the possibilities are endless. But it is also our role to show them that achievement does not come for free and effort is a primary factor in the formula for success. I feel that we have the tools now, more than ever, to make teaching a very rewarding experience for both my students and ourselves.

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

Facing the unknown can often be disconcerting, especially when you want very much to find a great home-based career, like medical transcription. “How long will it take to get through the school?” And, “How long until I get my first paycheck?” are common concerns asked by people considering a career in medical transcription. Here we’ll address both these issues.

First things first - How long will it take? On average you can expect to get through a good medical transcription school in about nine to twelve months. This assumes that you work on it consistently and part-time. All together, it will take about 600-700 hours. Say you work at it three hours a day, five days a week - that’s 15 hours a week. Divide that into 600, and you get 40 weeks — which is about nine and a half months. If you consistently work at it just a half hour longer each day, it’ll shave more than a month off that.

Obviously, that’s a great deal of time away from home — usually the very thing people searching for a new career often don’t want to leave behind. Fortunately, the best medical transcription schools allow you to work at home at your own pace.

So, when can I get my first check? The thing to remember is that the more time you are willing to dedicate to your studies, the sooner you will be able to start working from home and get that first check! After all, that is really what it is all about, isn’t it?

Regardless of your current situation, you should be able to get through a quality medical transcription school working a few hours a day, and as many days per week that you are able dedicate to the program. A good medical transcription school will guide you through the process systematically — step by step. With a moderate amount of effort and dedication you will quickly gain the confidence you need to complete the program. So, find the best medical transcription school you can, and launch your future career today!

Pillars of Learning

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

Pillars of Learning

Throughout life you and I learn through many avenues. While in school and at work assignments and tasks are made which rely on your capability to learn. Since positive change happens, the learning is continuous. It should excite us as is and allow the imagination to play with the knowledge to do more good. Stimulate learning to experience a continuous cycle of transformation.

See, each of us is at our respective best level and must take a “spirit enhancing action” to generate a “spirit enhancing result” to transform to a “New Best Level”. As a boy, I was fortunate to be an excellent learner and student. I did as told and performed well. Years later, I graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree and became an engineering professional.

Then, learning became a serious challenge because of my mental health challenge. I forced myself to examine learning on a new level to help me. I discovered the following:

Wisdom, intuition (sixth sense), the subconscious, presence, and timing are complex. True, you can put them in the category of learning. Yes, they are not teachable. The individual innately acquires these characteristics. To what level is up to the person. The best another can do is to guide the individual.

However, traditional learning both written and verbal needed to be stimulated for my survival. Throughout formal education and in the workplace no one taught me how to study or work. Of course, practice, pretest, and just do it was often heard advice. After reflecting on my education and work, I realized in grade school the teacher identified the skill to learn and in college and at work it was indirectly identified by the professor or your boss. The question formed in my mind. Why do I learn some skills easily and others not as easily? You might have had the same question.

This is the fun learning structure which evolved:

* Identify the skill

* Learn the skill

* Practice and/or rehearse

* Grow your business and life

The skill can be a traditional or soft skill. Traditional skills are knowledge based fundamentals and soft skills are via interaction with others to teach the fundamentals or come up with a workable plan. I advice you to ask meaningful and thought provoking questions to stimulate profitable conversations to take relationships to a “New Best Level”.

The statistics are alarming how many people do not read books after college. Being an engineer, I know many engineers who want to tinker and not read. My advice to you is to read (skill identified) from more than one source about the same topic and use the fun learning structure. Make sure you tinker throughout the pipeline, not only on one end. It will cut years off of the attainment of your goals and make learning and work a more stimulating and rewarding process.

We practice and/or rehearse for retention and memorization. The learned can then be easily recalled. So, you think you didn’t have a business in grade school or college.

How about when you went to the counter to buy candy, a drink, or a toy? I’m sure the merchant didn’t turn your money away. You’re in business! Grow it and your life! It’s an exciting journey of fulfillment and more peace.

We all have more options after increasing our learning. Today, I use what I learned to stimulate the mind, heart, body, and spirit of individuals and teams.

Let me know what your boss, colleagues, customers, and fans think of your performance at a “New Best Level”.

Read this Article if You No Longer Vote

Many Americans do not vote, which seems silly considering our democracy has proven to propel us into the status of being one of the most Free countries on the Planet. Recently the world watched as Iraq was liberated and the citizens were able to vote and plot their own course for their future. With purple fingers as proof they made a choice to rule their own destiny. Again Iraqi citizens showed up in droves to ratify a new Constitution and set of rules they agreed to live by. It is truly inspirational and for them a turning point in the Middle of the Middle East.

As we watch these wonders our heart smiles and we understand and feel the raw emotion of their endeavors and their new found freedoms, yet in our Nation we have so many who do not vote. Some do not vote because they are cynics others because, they are not too worried about much and although not completely satisfied, they are content and happy to live in the United States and are not too concerned about any one issue.

Whatever the reason the lethargic displacement of the American voter is growing. And of those who do not vote a growing majority of them are in the cynical camp. Yet they are the very ones who could change it and swing the next election, if they really cared too. Often American politics and modern bureaucracy is compared to the frog you boil in a pot, turn up the water one degree at a time and the frog just stays their in the warmth, eventually very content and then as it gets too hot for him, he can no longer move to jump out.

Perhaps you should vote and think about yourself as that frog. Perhaps you are cynical and know it really does not matter as most people vote by what they hear on the TV or read in the newspaper and those who have surrendered their minds to the mass media hysteria far out way your one vote. Yet if all of us decided to vote all at the same time and speak out loud, while I’ll just bet we could not only swing the elections and get this country back on track, but also swing the media into dumping some of this purported politically correct garbage and hokum that they inundate the populous with. What say you? Well, no need to answer now, but do think on it tonight.

Leaflet Distribution a Effective Way to Promote Your Company during the Credit Crunch. How to Come through the Gloom

Posted by admin on February 20th, 2009 — Posted in Plugging

Doing leaflet distribution services are one of the freshest ways to derive edge over your competitors. How? Direct Mailing is the answer. By using a endless leaflet distribution campaign you can attain maximal
exposure via the letterbox. Its a very over looked advertising technique which turns very well, that is ofcourse is using leaflet distributors

If your product is designed to attract to a wide market and you want to focalize on a very particular country, mailbox promotion is a great, cut-price way of touching your direct market.

But particular in the readying of your leaflet distribution causes as this is all important if you are to make the best of your investment.

Leaflet distribution allows you to bring forth specific response from directed groups of customers. It’s a peculiarly
useful instrument for small business enterprises because it lets you to concentrate reasonable resources where they are most probably to bring on result and quantify the success of promotions accurately by breaking down responses. Just remember that the outcomes of leaflet distributoin aren’t secured. A poorly planned or targeted adverting campaign will be a waste of cash

There are a list of new methods in which leaflet distribution has been applied in a semipolitical way. Several of these causes are as follows. One of the most general practices of pamphlet drops is to provide people with info to counter info that has been distributed by the opponent. The leaflets can also be utilised to endanger people with an assault. This is peculiarly likely in battles in which regular armies can inform foe troops that they will occupy if no action is taken. The leaflets in war situations are often used to encourage the opposition to surrender and if how to go about surrendering without facilitating a retaliation.

If you have decided that a leaflet distribution will be a right form of promoting in order to bring in some much required future work, then you need to set about the task of selecting the most acceptable business to carry out the promotion for you.

There are many factors to be considered when doing this, these are key in receiving the best results from your promotion.
