Registered Nursing Continuing Education

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

The completion of two to four years of education, with an associate degree or a baccalaureate degree, is a basic requirement to become a Registered Nurse. The field of nursing is wide open, because of a shotage of muc needed nurses in hospitals and other venues across the country and the world.

There are many types of courses and providers available. The common goal of these courses is to prepare the future nurses for initial entry into practice and RN licensure [procedure of which differs from state to state in the US] and work their way up the professional ladder.

The candidates should complete a minimum number of hours of CE courses to qualify for licensure. They are also expected to pass the NCLEX-RN® examination. This examination measures the competencies needed to practice nursing safely and effectively as a newly licensed entry-level RN. NCLEX-RN® is used by Boards of Nursing all over the US and its territories.

If a nursing aspirant had her education abroad, she has to take the RNCGFNS, which provides a certification platform and includes a test of English proficiency, and an examination designed to prepare for the NCLEX-RN® examination. The CGFNS certificate program, which is only available for RN candidates, is well-established and serves as a requirement by 42 Boards of Nursing.

The Florida Nurses Association says in the home page of its official website www.floridanurse.org, ‘Nursing is not a job. It is a profession requiring specialized knowledge and skills’. A Continuing Education program is the best way to acquire this.

Nursing Continuing Education provides detailed information on nursing continuing education, free nursing continuing education, nursing continuing education courses, nursing continuing education credits and more. Nursing Continuing Education is affiliated with Top Nursing Schools.

How To Save Money When You Buy College Textbooks

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

College students are often shocked by the amount they have to pay for college textbooks each semester. If you add it up over the course of the year it can prove to be a very expensive part of your college education. But there are ways to save money when you buy your college textbooks, and here are a few tips on how you can do that.

First of all, recognize that the most expensive option that you will have for buying your college textbooks is to buy them at the school bookstore. Traditionally, university and college bookstores mark up the prices on their college textbooks by quite a bit more than you will find almost anywhere else.

So for instance, if you want to buy the textbooks that you will need for each semester from a college bookstore, you can most likely expect to spend somewhere between $300 - $400 just for that one semester alone. Obviously then, if you double that figure, it would be very easy to spend $600 - $800 for the entire year’s worth of textbooks that you will need for your individual classes. And depending on the classes that you are taking, some textbooks may cost well over $100 - $150 apiece, raising your overall costs even more.

There are advantages to buying from a university bookstore however, including the convenience and time saving factors. All you have to do is just visit your campus, go to the bookstore, get your books and pay your money. And most of the time you will be sure to get the exact textbook that you need for the classes you will be taking.

You can however save some money at a school bookstore by asking for used textbooks instead, as these are often sold at a discount. However, many school bookstores don’t seem to have much selection when it comes to used college textbooks, so it may not be much of an option.

A second option for buying your college textbooks is to get them from an off campus bookstore instead. The advantages in using this kind of bookstore is that you can usually save money on the price of new college textbooks, and they usually have a better selection of used books as well.

However, the best way to save lots of money on college textbooks is to buy them online at the Amazon or Ebay websites. Here is where you can get your best deals on both new and used college textbooks anywhere. Many students that have taken the course that you will be taking, will be putting their college textbook up online for sale at a greatly reduced price. In fact, if you buy your textbook online at a deep discount and then sell it yourself at the end of the semester, you may wind up having very little overall costs for your college textbooks each year. The only drawback with buying your books online is that there will be some shipping time delay while the books are being sent to you. So be sure that you start your online shopping as soon as the professors lists the required textbooks needed for the coming semester.

Buying college textbooks need not be a very expensive financial burden for most college students. As you can see from this article there are ways that you can dramatically lower your college costs by buying college textbooks for much less.

From High School to College or University - 2 - Preparing the Foundations of Successful Study

Posted by admin on April 26th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

During the early days at college, you will be setting the foundations for all your future studies. This is, therefore, a crucial time in tilting you towards success or failure. As with anything new, you will soon form habits, and it is up to you to ensure that those habits are good habits.

There are certain areas of college life and study in which establishing good habits early on can help you towards your goal of good grades and a successful graduation. It is well worth focusing your attention on these areas before arriving at college, and in your first few weeks there. By doing so, you can establish some good study habits, and make your college life run that much more smoothly and successfully. The following are some of the key areas of your new life of college study where you will need solid preparation and attention from the outset.

Acknowledging the Competition

It is the brighter students at High School who will probably be the ones who make it to college and university. You were one of those, but you will notice a big difference in your relative position at college. Whereas before you may have been one of the top students in your class, once you get to college you will just be one of many bright students.

By being aware of this increased competition, and being mentally prepared for it, you are more likely to shine again in your new environment, rather than feeling overawed by the other intelligent students. Also bear in mind that with the right preparation and improvement of your study skills, and by establishing the right habits, you can perform better than even the most intelligent student.

Scheduling Your Time

One of the big differences at college will be the amount of “spare” time you have. You may only have 15 hours of lectures in a week, and it is up to you to schedule the rest of your time. Whether you succeed at college or not may well depend on how well you are able to organize yourself, and schedule your time to best effect.

So long as you are aware of the dangers of wasting that spare time, then you will have a chance of scheduling it wisely. Time management skills are therefore worth acquiring before you even go to college, and there is plenty of useful information online about managing time. Regard time management as an essential study skill, and prepare accordingly. It will stand you in good stead for the future after college as well, as time management is just as important in business or working life.

Harder Work

One thing is certain, and that is college work will be much tougher than High School work. If, after a few weeks, you do not think it is harder, then the chances are you have not grasped what you really need to do to keep up with and on top of your studies. You should go to college expecting to work hard, and then ensure that you do.

Note Taking

Another major difference between the learning methods at High School and college is the need, at college, to take copious notes in the lecture room. You should be mentally prepared for this at a minimum, but, like time management, you can acquire skills on note taking to make yourself more efficient. You will be pressed for time at college, so in every aspect of your study, it is wise to improve your study skill. That includes note taking.

Faster Reading

In the lecture room you need to become efficient at taking notes. Outside of the lecture room, you will have an enormous amount of reading to do. Such a volume may seem overwhelming, but reading is another area where you can improve, and thus increase your ability to study effectively. Speed reading is a talent anybody can acquire, and if you can acquire it before you reach college, so much the better.

Memory

Once at college, you will be bombarded with information, facts relating to the subjects you are studying. Being great at reasoning and making use of facts is no use if you cannot remember those facts in the first place. Improving your memory is therefore something you will benefit greatly from. Even if you think you have a good memory, you can improve further.

I went back to studying, for a professional qualification, 12 years after leaving school. Not being academic as a student, and having a “poor” memory, I knew I would have great difficulty competing mostly against 21/22 year olds fresh from university. So, I focused on my memory, learnt as much as I could about memory techniques, and that was enough (plus hard work, of course) to not only help me keep up, but in some cases keep ahead of the competition.

Improving memory really does make a big difference to your study prospects, and also in later working life. It is another study skill that will always be with you as you move on to other things after college or university.

By preparing yourself in the areas of note taking, time management, faster reading, and memory, you should have a head start on other students, even if they are brighter than you. By such preparation and focusing on your study skills before going to college, it is you who will appear the brightest, as you come across as well organized, able to grasp and recall facts with ease, and able to get through a lot more work in a shorter time than those around you.

College - Good Grade Obsession

Posted by admin on April 26th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

Colleges have been reviewing far too many applications recently that show students are addicted to getting good grades which means they are continuously sacrificing the time to figure out what extra-curricular activities interest them. These students are becoming more and more robotic in a greatly increasing competitive atmosphere. Although a student’s academic career is the main focus of the applicants, the problem lies when the college has to figure out what to do when they have too many applicants with a grade point average of 3.8-4.0. There have been several circumstances where the student with the 4.0 does not get into the college and student with the lower grade point average does.

Of course colleges are looking for those students who can do well academically, but they also want their students to come with a certain energy towards innovation. They want their students to be able to contribute creatively and receive some sort of recognition eventually. Basically, colleges need those students who can go beyond expectation. They need the students who have a love in life beyond academics. They need students who can excel outside of the classroom; at sports, volunteer work, dancing, traveling, and the list goes on and on. These students also need to be able to present this in a 4-8 page college application. Now, how do you do this? How does one go about preparing for this task?

It is very important that a student do two things while also maintaining a good grade point average. They must have personal time to themselves to breathe and relax and they also have to commit to something that they love to do outside of the classroom. The students who stay committed to one activity for three years show a much stronger level of commitment and motivation than the student that who participates in twenty activities for a short period of time. However, the students who participate in two or more activities for two or more years show even more potential than those with only one.

When colleges get applications that show various extra-curricular activities with no connection to each other, they question them. Some of these applications will have all different kinds of activities like “one month volunteering at a homeless shelter, three months at a vet hospital, 6 months in dance lessons” etc. Although these applications are full of extra curricular activities, these students show questionable motivation and a lack of commitment. This may simply mean that the student participated in the activities for the sole purpose of filling up that page in the college application. Sometimes these assumptions are clarified in the student’s essay but there are times when they are not and this does not look good for the applicant no matter what his or her grades are like.

Students should always keep in mind that colleges want those students who can think critically. They want the student who can pursue an idea, not the one who simply follows the rules and meets criteria. Colleges want the student who can think outside the box.

How Brand as an Intellectual Property has Led to Corporate Globalisation?

Posted by admin on April 23rd, 2009 — Posted in Branding

Introduction

Globalisation is referred to as a set of profound material changes that have an impact on relations between societies in the past few decades. The identifiable features of these material changes are witnessed in the development and growth of web, satellite transmission, fibre-optic technology, broadband operations, transnational corporations and the emergence of World Trade Organisation.

Globalisation is transformation of how ideas travel and the nature of their final destination leading to increase in international trade thereby increased competition. Firms expand by penetrating established markets to create new markets for their products. This necessitates them to have identity for them by establishing trademarks by way of branding and keep on administering to create value. While expanding and penetrating newer markets; developing, promoting and performing marketing operations using different trade marks for different countries become costlier. The more the countries a trademark is known, the greater is its value and the greater the need to protect the same by registering at the global level. Trademark registration involves not only higher costs but also procedural constraints while registering the same in every country.

Brands have become part of not only an economic market, but also a metaphorical market because they involve and propagate a system of using signs to control meaning and language as brands fulfils several different economic functions.

Identification: On a basic level, it serves an identification function by associating a product with a company.

Communication: More abstractly, it has an informative function, in that it provides a vehicle for the efficient communication of information, thereby reducing consumer search costs in choosing a product. Signaling: The use of branding in advertising also serves a signaling function, in that, it suggests that a company who is willing to expend a substantial sum on its advertising must have developed a good product. Expression: Lastly, branding also serves an expressive function, in the sense that it links a particular consumer identity or essence with a product.

Mega - branding Strategy

Branding involves not just the product name, advertisements, or the use of a logo, but the core assumptions and beliefs that are conjured up when one thinks of the brand. The best brands were those who could generate a certain psychological feeling about the product. Thus, the “brand essence” moved away from a focus on the product and toward a psychological association of the brand with a certain identity. Today, firms undertake “mega-branding” strategy, in which firms devote a substantial portion of their income towards placing their logo on a variety of different products and events, further amplifying the link between psychological, cultural and corporate association. In this way manufacturers control both supply and demand by manipulating consumer trends through the skilful promotion of the brand.

Brand Plan - A Valuable Management Tool

Brand plan is a crucial step in charting a business route to success. A good brand plan provides an overview of where the brand is, how it plans to position or reposition itself, and how it seeks to achieve its business objectives. A well-prepared and regularly updated brand plan is a valuable management tool that serves variety of purposes. It helps examine the feasibility of taking a brand idea to the market. A written brand plan forces a firm to think through all the key issues - such as the potential demand, the nature of the competition, entry barriers, the unique selling proposition, key employees, relevant technologies and strategic partners, raising funds, projected start-up costs, and the like.

A brand plan is a reference document that provides management with an objective basis for determining whether the brand is on track to meet its goals and objectives with the available resources in a set timeframe. Innovation is very important and critical to the future of the brands. Context, Leadership and core values of the brands are the drivers of innovation. One needs to address “What is the current situation of the brand? What threats for survival might exist?”, “What is the leadership passionate about? What drives the choices, decisions and behaviour in the organisation? How innovation and creativity improve brand? How this can be strengthened to be considered as a global brand? Customer analysis and brainstorming help generate ideas for innovation. Internal sources and customers are the best sources of ideas.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has initiated and promoted the Madrid Protocol, which establishes a system for the international registration of trademarks to reduce this cost due to multiple registrations in different countries. This protocol is termed as the Intellectual Property Rights. Intellectual Property Rights cover Patents, Trade-marks, Industrial designs, Copy rights & related rights, Geographical indications and Trade secrets & Undisclosed information. Trademarks have become more than a means of protecting market share. They have become an invaluable tool in claiming and creating markets. From just being a trade mark, they become trust marks as brands. According to the author and journalist Naomi Klein, “branded world where the logo is a common language understood by everyone” leading to a shift in corporate marketing strategies: from promoting commodities based on the needs of the marketplace, to promoting a brand to represent a lifestyle thereby create needs in the marketplace. The branding strategy makes the trademark and the socio-cultural identities associated with the mark including the product itself.

Intellectual property in a brand plan becomes critical as business incubator or investors need to understand and accept the coherence of the brand idea including its protection. New or original knowledge and/or creative expression of ideas, protectable by the system of intellectual property (IP), underpin their competitive advantage and success. Therefore, a brand plan should cogently reflect how the firm plans to protect, manage and leverage its intellectual property assets for brand success. Patents for Brands provide exclusivity for the commercialization of inventions and often play a crucial role in convincing investors or lenders. One or more patents along with industrial design registrations reflect as a proof of brands ability to dissuade competitors using original or aesthetically attractive features of the brand. Therefore, a brand plan should integrate intellectual property and reflect the steps that are planned to develop, register and effective use of intangible assets to win and retain market share from competitors.

While integrating intellectual property, operational elements that make the brand innovative like, Challenge, customer focus, creativity, communication, collaboration, completion and contemplation should also be considered.
Issues

The possibility of inadvertently infringing a third party’s intellectual property rights is high in high-tech sectors. Confidential information such as details of production, inventions, and technical, financial and marketing know-how is often the source of competitive advantage. Intellectual Property can be a highly valuable asset. Managing and ascribing a value on the balance sheet of the brand will make it more attractive to potential investors. The more the position in the market place is exploited, more the value will be of the property while licensing it or selling the brand.

Conclusion

Administering Intellectual Property is an arduous task for approaching investors and considering the market opportunities for the brand. As the Intellectual Property provides the brand with competitive advantages and increases its value, it is necessary to let the investors know that the intellectual property integrates with the brand plan. Reference to the assets of the brand and its market opportunities should list both the tangible and intangible assets, as the latter are often the key to success of the brand. The growing emphasis on the brand has been paralleled by a massive expansion of property rights in trade symbols. In the past, the law’s major emphasis focused on protecting a mark in order to avoid the danger of consumer confusion, or piracy between goods which used similar marks. However, today, the focus has shifted towards trademark protection. In other words, in order to protect their trade marks used in advertisements and logos, firms turn to trademark law, and copyright law. As per the trademarks, 1999, the term mark includes a device, brand, heading, label, ticket, name signature, word, letter or numeral or any combination thereof. The new Trade Marks Act, 1999 has made far reaching changes in the act considering the liberalisation and globalisation of economy. They include particularly the following:

a. Registration of Service Marks

b. Collective marks provided

c. Two parts A & B abolished

d. Well known trademarks protected even if not registered

e. Shape of words can also be registered

Hence, intellectual property law should form a key part of every aspect of a good brand plan.

Humans are not special, hate to break it to you

Posted by admin on April 18th, 2009 — Posted in Education Special

I hate to break it to you, but humans are not all that special really. I laugh at the self importance humans place on this species as if some how they are better, more evolved or the divine work and special project of a God. There is actually not a single piece of evidence for that. We see the same general characteristics we see in humans in house pets, primates, birds and even fish. Yes, indeed we have a larger brain and the point is? Few humans bother to use its potential. Now that I have offended every human on the planet, let me recommend a book to you:

“The Ape and The Sushi Master-Cultural Reflections of a Primatologist” By Frans de Wall.

Very interesting that we as Human Beings may believe we are human because we are social animals, as if somehow that is what makes us different. Frans’s first book was “Chimpanzee Politics Power and Sex Among apes” was recommended reading by Newt Gingrich for freshman Congressmen. I can certainly see why having had a little political fun in my past. I think every one who has a spiritual or passion driven need for the understanding of cultural anthropology should read this book. I found particularly interesting the notion that chimpanzees used tools like rocks and flat stones to crush pinecones to get out the seeds in the center to eat.

The tools were so similar to those used by Indian cultures like the American Indians, Incas, Mayans and Aztecs that one might have to wonder if they learned that from us or if we learned that technique from them. Of course their stones were bigger because they were stronger, so many of the ancient stones found in caves which were large did not come from humans but from Apes and Chimpanzees. Nearly ten times the weight. So much for Louis Leakey’s work may actually have been miss interpreted. If you read Jane Goodall, Louis and Richard Leaky, Dian Fossy you will find the answers of culture in other species to be so similar it is scary.

We know from Dolphins and ordinary house pets from observations that no one can dismiss some sort of culturalization amongst other species. In Western Cultures we have hard time with this since we are the top of the food chain and therefore we cannot be similar to other species. This is a falsity of western culture. I bet Hitler would have been pissed about my comments, since not only were his blond haired blue eyed Aryan considered the top of the food chain and he actually believed everyone else inferior. We as a western culture are also in the belief that our human race as a whole is the tops. But after reading this book we find that chimpanzees, which are of higher intelligence also have an incredible socialization.

The old question of nature VS nurture tends to lend itself quite nicely to theories that culturalzation does not purely come from genetics, but rather from a simple form of behavioral transmission. Hey, before you say that statement is nuts read the book yourself and see the examples. We as humans are both similar and different, but with respect to culture only the actual actions of the culture are different, not culture in itself. The Taliban had culture, just an unacceptable type of culture to the rest of the world. I really do not see a lot of difference between them and their warlords and the attacks on the US, with the culturaliation of chimpanzees. And we all agree that the Taliban are human beings, just not very good ones with respect to our beliefs and culture. If we are looking for what makes humans different to other species you will not find it in the cultural learnings of the species; much to similar. We will have to look further. If you look towards language you would also be incorrect, if you look at genetics we too are much too similar to the apes and the chimpanzees. What makes people different may only be that we have gotten to a spot to discuss it rather than just do it.

Yet until the codes of the languages of the dolphins are broken or the fact that a flock of 1000 little birds can all change direction at the same time without hitting each other, I would hold fast on that notion as well. Assuming that apes and chimpanzees also have culture but do not know why they are doing it in the first place, one might then ask why do humans wear clothes in warm climates. Why are we doing what we do? We talk about it, yet cannot seem to reason out of it.

Maslow has so far to go to finish his works, too bad he is dead, as we still have not answered these questions. We maybe the conqueror of the surface of the Earth thus far, yet we have unexplored oceans and caves with other species who may have culture and other attributes which likely will be difficult for us to understand or recognize. When we do, it maybe tougher than we think to redefine ourselves as vastly different than other living things on the planet. If you have the intellect to look beyond your enculturation and religion, then I recommend you buy this book. If not live in the dark and we’ll wake you up if we need you in your cave.
